Euthanasia
Euthanasia is a very controversial and widely debated topic. When this topic is mentioned, one of the first thoughts that comes to mind is Dr. Jack Kevorkian, A.K.A "Dr. Death". To bring further attention to this matter, HBO recently produced a film (You Don't Know Jack) about his life and career as a Pathologist and his role in the assisted suicide deaths of numerous of his terminally ill patients. Below is the HBO Trailer for the movie. This Trailer could be used to introduce the topic of Euthanasia to the class, and serve as a mean to begin a guided discussion.
So, is Euthanasia justifiable homicide or murder? To better understand this question, it is important for the students to understand the States of Mind of murder and how the three elements (Premeditation, Deliberation, and Malice) play a role in differentiating between criminal and justifiable homicide.
In addition, the students can analyze and reflect on the Dr. Jack Kevorkian video below regarding his outlook on the matter, and whether or not he thinks the procedure constitutes murder.
To help the students understand the difference between murder and self defense, they can do a case analysis. As they do their analysis, they determine whether or not the evidence in the case supports the elements of murder. A good case to analyze is the one provided below, Invitation to Murder, aired on CBS News 48 Hour Mystery.
